The Dragontails Head to Water
Recently, the Dragontails, one of our after school classes, took a trip to the Schuylkill River where they visited the outdoor areas of Fairmount Water Works and some galleries of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
The trip began at the water. As they watched the water flow over the dam, children and teachers talked about where the river starts and how we get our drinking water. They spotted many kinds of birds that they don't usually see at PIC - ducks, seagulls, cormorants, and BIG Canadian geese (who wanted to eat their lunch).
Inside the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Dragontails looked at paintings, furniture, fireplaces, and chandeliers. They had the chance to sit and draw their own pictures in one of the galleries. They pretended to travel back in time to Japan in 1917, and thought about what it would be like to come for tea in the teahouse. Everyone wanted to go inside!
At PIC we are lucky to have many cultural and environmental sites so accessible to us. All it takes is a small field trip for us to have hands-on learning opportunities and experience different cultures and time periods.
As the school year begins to wind down, look for more adventures to come!
