A PIC Plant Sale Primer

The PIC Plant Sale has become a West Philadelphia tradition! Here are the basics every PIC family needs to know about the event before we officially launch next week. More detailed information will be provided with the help of PIC's Room Parents, so keep an eye on your email! Of course, if you have any questions along the way, please email Development Manager Karen Stachelek.

What is the Plant Sale?
The Plant Sale is one of two annual fundraisers at PIC. There will be a wonderful selection of plants (annuals, perennials, herbs, and hanging baskets) to choose from! This year we are also featuring some houseplants and native plants. People will order online or use paper forms.

Why do we have the Plant Sale?
To support the PIC scholarship fund! PIC established a scholarship fund in 1986 so that more neighborhood families could afford high-quality child care. Last year, 35 PIC families were awarded tuition assistance to help with the cost of care.

What is our goal?
Last year we sold over $45,000 worth of plants and filled more than 750 orders. This year we hope to top that– we know we can do it if everyone gets involved!

When is the Plant Sale?
The Plant Sale is will be on May 1 and 2, which is the weekend before Mother’s Day.

Why are you telling me now?
We are getting ready to kick-off the pre-order period from March 13 to April 15.

What can I do?
PIC families truly drive the success of this event through the PRE-SALE CAMPAIGN. Families across the Center are asked to reach out to their family, friends, neighbors and co-workers during this period.

How do you order plants?
It's easy to buy and sell plants at the PIC Plant Sale. Once the Pre-Sale Campaign is launched on March 13, you will be able to visit the PIC Plant Sale Online Store to view the entire selection of plants and place your order. Paper order forms will also be available throughout the Center.

When do the plants arrive?
Thousands of plants will arrive at PIC the week before the sale. Over the course of the week, volunteers will gather in the chapel next to PIC to pick the orders (expect over 700!). Orders may be picked up in the chapel on the Friday and Saturday before the Sale. Early pick-up is on Thursday for orders totaling over $250.

Will there be chances to earn PPP hours?
This is PIC’s most volunteer-intensive event. It’s also a lot of fun. We need help at the Center-wide work days on March 15 and April 26.

During the week of the Sale, we’ll receive a massive plant order from the nurseries and need dozens of volunteers to help unload the trucks, fill pre-orders and help with the two-day sale. Email Event Co-Chair Marnie Fogelson-Teel to sign up.

Also, for every $20 you sell over $100, you will earn 1 PPP hour and that can add up very quickly! With Mother’s Day around the corner and such a wide selection, it’s not hard to do!

Is there anything else?
During the month-long pre-sale period, we will plant the seed of friendly competetion throughout PIC. Classrooms will band together and to try and have every family and teacher submit at least one pre-order. Classrooms that achieve 100% participation will receive a prize to enhance learning in their classrooms. The ONE classroom that raises the most in sales will have an additional $100 to spend. It is not the size of the class that determines sales, it’s the spirit!!

We thank you all for your support in making this important fundraiser a success and If you think of any other questionsplease email Development Manager Karen Stachelek.
