February is Black History Month
February is Black History Month—a time to honor the history, creativity, and leadership of Black people, past and present. At PIC, this month also invites us to notice how Black history and culture show up in our classrooms every day.
Young children learn through books, play, music, art, and the questions they ask as they try to make sense of the world around them. We hear questions like Who is this about? Why did that happen? Why do people look different? Those moments matter. They are opportunities to help children understand themselves, one another, and the idea that everyone belongs.
Our work is to meet children’s curiosity with care and intention—choosing stories that reflect their lives, creating play experiences that celebrate many identities, and modeling respect, fairness, and joy in how we treat one another. When children see themselves reflected and valued, they build confidence. When they learn about others, they build empathy.
I’m grateful to our staff and families for creating classrooms where all children feel seen, safe, and supported. May this month—and every month—remind us that learning, belonging, and care are deeply connected.
With appreciation,
Jamila
