PIC Mom Advocates for Early Learners

Sonja at PIC Lemonade Lull

Meet Sonja Claxton. Sonja's daughter Lailah went through PIC's early learning program. She is spending the summer in PIC's camp and will return to the After School Center in the fall.

Like all parents, Sonja wanted to give Lailah the best start in life, but as a single mom she could not afford the cost of a high quality child care program.

On the road to PIC, Sonja learned a lot about the early learning community, family involvment, and advocacy.

She recently shared her story of struggle and perseverance in raising Lailah with the skills and support she needed for her early education and care.

Sonja learned early on about the importance of family participation and has been very involved at PIC.

According to Sonja, "I was once on the Parent Involvement Committee after attending DVAEYC's 2012 Annual Conference entitled: Families Matter: Engaging Families, Partnering for Success. While there, I recommended parent advocacy information in the PIC newsletters. It seems to be working out very well."

Recently, Sonja has joined the Diversity Committee where she will continue working to strenghten the PIC community.
