In the Classroom: The Grasshoppers

It all began with Green Eggs and Ham! The Grasshoppers have just wrapped up a lively study focusing on the prolific author Dr. Seuss, aka Theodor Seuss Geisel. We dove into developing literacy skills as we devoured title after title of the 40+ books written by Dr. Seuss.

 

It began with the simple recognition of favorite stories, such as: Green Eggs and Ham, The Lorax and The Cat in the Hat. It became easy for us to identify the written name "Dr. Seuss" on the many books that filled our shelves these past few weeks. It was also exciting for children to bring in their Seuss books from home to share.

 

One of the more difficult skills we worked on during our Seuss study was the art of rhyming. This is a challenging task and requires attention to the end sound of two words. Dr. Seuss was a master of rhyming and we found many opportunities to listen to rhymes and then create our own.

 

Such careful attention to the details of books strengthened our vocabulary and understanding of book-related professions in particular. We were inspired to create our own books out of stapled paper. We added details like a title on the front cover, author’s name, illustrator’s name and page numbers inside. 

 

We love to create ways to connect with other classes and for our closing celebration of our study we created and delivered invitations for a puppet show of Yertle the Turtle.

 

In closing, the Grasshoppers shared their love of storytelling and Dr. Seuss with you, and that’s what we set out to do!
