The First Snowflake of the Season
a message from Executive Director Jamila Carter
Seeing a child beam with wonder and excitement at the first snowflake of the season is truly heartwarming. Their curiosity blossoms as they contemplate the limitless possibilities that snow play offers.
At PIC we believe connecting children with nature and outdoor play isn’t reserved for warm weather and sunny days. Even in winter, children bundle up in weather appropriate clothing and venture outside to explore rain and snow. Outdoor winter play presents unique opportunities for learning and exploration and fosters healthy physical and social development.
The Magic Circle playground provides the perfect backdrop for outdoor play and rich learning experiences. The children notice seasonal changes and make thoughtful observations as the vibrant colors of spring, summer and fall fade into the neutral tones of winter.
Winter presents exciting opportunities to learn about science and nature. For instance, on a snowy day children can learn about weather patterns, freezing and melting, the water cycle and how animal behavior changes in the winter. They might track animal footprints in the snow, create ice art to observe freezing processes, or experiment with how snow transforms into water when it melts.
Winter outdoor play also promotes socio-emotional learning and development. Children assess risk and build confidence as they navigate new terrain. Activities like building a snowman or creating snow forts encourage creative problem solving and foster joy as children work together.
Beyond learning and social development, outdoor play in winter is vital for physical health. Research shows that young children need 60 to 90 minutes of physical activity each day. Spending time outdoors during the winter months keeps children active, strengthens their immune systems, and helps reduce stress. At PIC, we embrace the benefits of outdoor play year-round, ensuring children stay healthy and energized even during the colder months.
While it might be tempting to stay cozy indoors, stepping outside during winter opens the door to countless possibilities for exploration, growth, and connection. By embracing outdoor play in all seasons, we give children the chance to thrive and discover the magic of winter.
For a beautiful reflection on seasons as a metaphor for life and relationships, I invite you to listen to Stevie Wonder’s "Summer Soft." The song’s soulful lyrics capture the beauty of change and the richness it brings, much like the experiences we foster through outdoor play.
