Annual Letter from the Executive Director

Children playing in Outdoor Classroom

December 2013

As a friend of the Parent-Infant Center, you already know that PIC’s high quality early care and education programs have been ahead of the curve for the past 35 years.

This past summer and fall, I watched children gather cucumbers and tomatoes from our expanded garden (and later eat them for morning snack). I saw preschoolers measure themselves against huge sunflowers that they had planted from seed. I smiled as children engaged in imaginary play, making many a mud pie, birthday cake, and pots of soup in the our new dirt digging area and mud kitchen.

As we begin the last stage of our Magic Circle Outdoor Classroom project, imagine children jumping among logs and tree stumps, building with branches and sticks, playing musical instruments and performing on an outdoor stage, creating art using natural materials, and playing among the wide variety of shrubs and plants that will soon be planted.

With rich moments outside each day to learn and explore, our children will connect with nature in a sustained way that all new research supports as critical in the early years of childhood. Soon we will become the first nature certified outdoor classroom at an early childhood program in the city of Philadelphia. Once again, PIC will be ahead of the curve!

Please join us in our commitment to provide innovative programming to children and their families by giving to our Annual Fund. Your gift will help us continue to serve as a model for other programs across our city (and country). We will continue to think big in creating outstanding programming for children and families. PIC will continue to offer exemplary experiences each and every day, something that every child and family deserve.

As you gather with your own family this holiday season, best wishes for a happy, healthy and peaceful new year!
