Lights Went On for After School
On Thursday, October 30, with help from our friend Representative Jim Roebuck, PIC hosted its first Lights on Aftershool event. After decorating the inside of the Stucco Building, our after schoolers gathered to talk a little about the importance of quality after school programs like PIC.
Children then lit a ceremonial "tree" to show the neighborhood that we are participating in this nation-wide call to celebrate programs like PIC and emphasize the need for more quality after-school programs throughtout the country.
Lights on Afterschool is a nationwide effort sponsored by the Afterschool Alliance to remind communities and legislators about the importance of safe and enriching out-of-school-time activities for children.
While participating after school programs officially celebrated on October 23, our ceremony on October 30 will emphasize the idea that attention to the need for after school programs needn't be limited to one day!
Read about the state of afterschool care in Pennsylvania in a recent study, which reflects the rise in children enrolled in after school programs since 2004, as well as the increasing unmet need for quality programs in the Commonwealth.
