Deb Writes In Memory of Marni

Marni Sweets high-fives PIC children
Seven years ago today, former PIC Executive Director Marni Sweet died after losing a battle with cancer.

Some of you knew Marni well and many others never met Marni. I write this today because I feel it is important to note and remember that much of the culture at PIC is because of Marni.

While she was in her position, PIC quadrupled in size and raised more than $1 million for child care and special programs working with families.

But I remember Marni not so much for all of her accomplishments at PIC, but for all she knew about building community. I vividly remember discussions with her about the importance of welcoming families into our programs and creating environments that are inclusive of all.

And I remember Marni's deep felt desire to professionalize the field of early childhood education by getting all teachers to complete their college educations and to increase salaries in this field.

Marni was an outstanding leader and one whom I continue to feel honored each day for the mentorship I received from her. I continue to believe that she is smiling from above as she sees her vision live on at PIC. I am certain she would be very proud.

In appreciation and memory,
