In the Classroom: The Roadrunners

Roadrunners enjoy zero-trash lunches

Roadrunners Care about the Planet

Caring for our planet is important in the Roadrunner classroom. We follow the PA Learning Standards on environment and ecology and talk about the impact each of us has on our environment.

There are so many ways that this environmental awareness can be supported at home. Here are a few ideas that you can do with your child:

  • Collect items to recycle and discuss the importance of recycling
  • Construct a compost heap and add to it on a regular basis
  • Turn off lights when leaving a room
  • Turn off water while brushing teeth
  • Plant a garden or help tend to a community garden
  • Visit parks and woods and let children freely play
  • Pack less- or zero-trash lunches
  • Take public transportation adventures
  • Encourage curiosity about nature and slowing down

One of our Roadrunners said it best when asked about her no-waste lunch:

“When I bring my lunch to school, and I open my lunch, there’s NO trash! My parents put containers that you can use again and again and again using them for food instead of foil or trash.  Trash takes up animals’ homes.  It takes up space where people could have their houses and a playground and pretty flowers. You know, if everyone had no trash in their lunch, all the Roadrunners would save the Earth so the Earth could be tidy and neat and no trash anywhere. “

It is wonderful to see our children thinking about ways to have an impact on the environment. It is never too early to begin planting the seeds of both loving and caring for the earth.
