Marni Sweet Building Opens
PIC has opened new infant, toddler and pre-k classrooms with renovation of the Marni Sweet Building -- 9,000 square feet of new space for high-quality child care!
Responding to the increasing demand for child care in University City, PIC and the University of Pennsylvania reached agreement in October 2009 to work in partnership on the $1.3 million renovation, which enabled our program to provide care for at least 50 additional children.
Expansion increases PIC’s child care capacity by one-third, but that’s only the beginning. Existing pre-k classrooms have moved to newly renovated rooms in the Sweet Building, and the vacated spaces give us an opportunity to improve working conditions for our growing staff of more than 40 full-time teachers. One former classroom will become a new teacher resource room – complete with more computers for lesson planning, shelves stocked with materials to support high-quality teaching, and space to meet and dream about ways to make the program even better.
PIC’s $1 million Sweet Dreams Campaign – launched in memory of Marni Sweet, PIC's longtime director – has raised $915,000 during the sharpest economic downturn in half a century.
The PIC Board committed the bulk of those funds, $675,000, to pay our share of renovations for the Sweet Building. To complete Marni’s vision we are raising additional funds to reconfigure old classrooms to serve new functions, upgrade existing classrooms, improve playgrounds, and expand our outreach to underserved families and the broader early childhood education community.

ArtStart 2009 - A 'Sweet' Success!
This year marked the 10th anniversary of ArtStart - PIC’s annual celebration of children’s artistic expression and
creativity.
Together, along with support from Beneficial Bank and a generous matching donation from Sacks & Weston, we raised over $20,000! Proceeds from the event will support the Sweet Dreams Campaign to expand PIC’s programs and services and the PIC Scholarship Fund.
